For people moving to Halifax with children, one of their main priorities is to find a good school and to get their children settled in their new environment as quickly as possible. As the province doesn’t appear to publish a school ranking guide, it’s sometimes a word of mouth or trusting-your-own-instincts kind of decision for you to make.
We got very lucky.
We’ve been exceptionally pleased with all three levels of schools here in Fall River, where we live. And it’s really nice to have all three schools – Elementary, Junior High and High School all within close proximity of one another. Yes, schooling is very different here from the UK (but that’s a whole other blog post….:)
The Halifax Regional School Board is a great resource and has a lot of really good information on it. For those of you in the planning stage, I thought you might find this link helpful. One of our favourites (and a fairly new addition to the site) is the school boundary map, which indicates the core geographic area that the school is designated to serve.
You can click on the neighbourhood/district you are looking at and see all the schools in the area, as well as the school catchment map. If you are looking to move into a specific school district, then it will make shopping for a new home much easier, as you will have already narrowed down your search.
Our suggestion would be to narrow down a couple of neighbourhoods that you like the look and feel of and then arrange to visit the schools based on that. That’s what we did and most other people who move into the area tend to do. After all, you know what suits you and your family better than anyone else 🙂
As always, feel free to get in touch if you have any questions whatsoever.
Enjoy your week,
Jane and Richard
Moving 2 Nova Scotia
** It is worth mentioning that the Nova Scotia government has recently agreed to move forward with a recommendation to dissolve the province’s seven elected regional school boards and instead create one provincial advisory council made up of people appointed by the minister of education.
** The other school districts within Nova Scotia (for the time being) are:
Annapolis Valley Regional School Board
Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School Board
Chignecto-Central Regional School Board
Conseil scolaire acadien provincial
South Shore Regional School Board
Strait Regional School Board
Tri-County Regional School Board
